RESPONSIBILIITES OF A JUSTICE OF THE PEACE
A Dallas County Justice of the Peace (JP) presides over small claims cases up to $20K, debt claim cases, eviction cases, Class C Misdemeanors, Administrative Proceedings (i.e., driver's license suspension appeals), mental health matters, and emergency detention requests. JP's can also issue birth certificates as well as perform marriage ceremonies.
